What Is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer. It develops in the outer layers of the skin and is often related to cumulative sun exposure over time.
SCC most commonly appears on sun-exposed areas such as:
- Face
- Ears
- Lips
- Neck
- Hands
While many cases are highly treatable, some can become more aggressive if left untreated, making early diagnosis and treatment important.
Why Mohs Surgery Is the Most Effective Treatment
Mohs surgery is frequently the preferred treatment for squamous cell carcinoma, especially for high-risk areas or cosmetically sensitive locations like the eyelids, ears, and lips.
This advanced technique allows for:
Complete cancer removal with real-time microscopic analysis
Maximum preservation of healthy tissue

The highest cure rates of any treatment method
By removing cancer layer by layer and examining each section immediately, Mohs surgery ensures no cancer cells are left behind.
With over 3,000+ successful Mohs surgeries performed, Dr. Freedman brings a high level of precision, experience, and individuality to every case, helping patients with even the most complex cases achieve optimal medical and cosmetic outcomes.

Dr Jeremy Freedman was excellent. He found and treated skin cancer that many other dermatologist were unable to find. Dr. Jeremy was able to stich back together a area that many other doctors would "not take the time," provide the extra effort and or have the ability to do so. This doctor takes his time and treats you like a person, not a number as they do at Waters Edge Dermatology. Through my journey with skin cancer and more than 10 different doctors throughout the years, Dr Jeremy is the best yet. The PA Barbara is thorough, professional and helps you feel at ease when facing uncomfortable procedures.![]()

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Freedman as well as his nurse/ PA, Alex! What a dynamic duo! These two individuals are very knowledgeable, personable, and have a wonderful sense of humor. I had to spend most of the day with them as they worked on my mom… And they made an unpleasant circumstance and situation, practically fun and joyful! Thank you for your excellent care and compassion!![]()

I had MOHS surgery on 10/31/24 with Dr Jeremy Freedman. I’ve has several MOHS surgeries with other offices and doctors and am familiar with the procedure. I was somewhat apprehensive dealing with a different doctor in another state, but my experience could not be more favorable. Dr Freedman and his staff were friendly, cheerful, and professional. They explained everything that they were doing before, during, and after surgery. The surgery on my ankle was successful on the first iteration. To enhance healing while preventing infection, they wrapped my leg from ankle to knee. They have scheduled weekly examinations of the wound and will wrap my leg again as needed until it is fully healed. I am grateful for their expertise and the methods utilized to reduce pain and assure a favorable outcome.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. When Should Squamous Cell Carcinoma Be Treated?
Squamous cell carcinoma should be evaluated and treated as soon as it is identified.
Common warning signs include:
- A rough, scaly patch
- A firm red bump
- A sore that does not heal
- A lesion that crusts, bleeds, or returns
If a spot persists or continues to change, it should be examined promptly.

What to Expect During Mohs Surgery
Mohs surgery is performed in our Miami office using local anesthesia and typically completed in a single visit.
Step 1
Local Anesthetic Applied
Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.
Step 2
Precise Removal
The visible tumor is removed along with a thin layer of surrounding tissue.
Step 3
Immediate Analysis
The tissue is examined under a microscope to check for remaining cancer cells.
Step 4
Layer-by-Layer Treatment
If cancer is still present, additional layers are removed only where needed.
Step 5
Reconstruction
Once the cancer is fully removed, the area is carefully repaired to optimize healing and cosmetic outcome.

Reconstruction After Squamous Cell Carcinoma Removal
Following Mohs surgery, reconstruction is performed with careful attention to both function and appearance, especially in highly visible areas like the face.
Dr. Freedman is highly experienced in performing closures designed to optimize healing and cosmetic outcomes.
For patients who prefer, reconstruction can be coordinated with a plastic surgeon. In these cases, the plastic surgeon may charge an additional fee for the closure portion of the procedure.
